Observing the pristine white granite with naked eye is not difficult. The inventors of the Aig de Blatiere summit site found themselves amazed by the rather weak pale grey granite with freshly exposed felsic veins that became visible to the naked eye about a month after the ascent of the south-west face. Initially, these veins were usually covered by the dark grey oxidised granite that appeared to be the matrix. The pale grey granite of the summit site is not at all rare, it occurs at many locations throughout the French Alps region. However, it is usually covered in many places by a big block that can appear much darker, often because it is devoid with grey oxidised cavities. At one point during the winter climbing season and in the early morning, while it is still dark, these pale grey blocks can be seen bare of the grey oxidised and covered in light moss.
The future of the mountain should be protected, and part of this is to move all of the climbing on top of the causses (the crenulated granite outcrop that will not melt during the permafrost sealing creation) to other mesa tops. The summits such as the Headwall and the Chimney are already protected by the massif, but there are many other rock zones on top of the causses that are accessible from the valley and could be opened up to climbing. However, some of these zones are also being seen by a lot of potential climbers who should be aware of the harmful psychological effects to these areas.
The new cable route was successfully opened in April, and many legs were climbed many times for the cable route. The last topo on the summit is given below. The bolts were retired for the walk-on trail. The ancient cairns are hardly visible. The south-west corner is still deeply polluted with rocks and rubble from the glacier development, and the west face has decreased in size (melt back). d2c66b5586
